Enterprise cloud communications service provider, Thinking Phone (News – Alert) Networks, announced a “rebranding campaign,” which company officials said will focus on “the importance of business analytics and application integration to driving enterprise unified communications deployment success and value.”

Included is all the usual things a full rebranding effort would entail, a new corporate identity, a new website presence, and re-naming of the company’s suite of enterprise unified communications services, which will now be offered under the ThinkingSuite ecosystem brand.

From where we sit it looks like a good idea, less clumsy and more memorable. Just make sure your customers still know where to find you, that’s the trick with rebranding, making sure everybody gets the memo.

Springfield, Mass.-based renowned voice solution provider Thing5 recently introduced a free service for social network fanatics. Called JawBite, this free service is designed to help consumers update their social online content, including Facebook (News – Alert) and Twitter, with just a phone call.

JawBite offers the users the option to review all content before it is posted. According to Thing5, JawBite is the first-to-market technology that offers this level of sophistication and ease of use for consumers to communicate digitally via their voice and any phone.

Thing5 further mentioned that using it is simple. Users register on the JawBite website, call a number from any phone, speak their updates and hang-up. Updates are transcribed and posted with an audio file attached so that posts can be heard and read. The user’s phone becomes a microphone, capturing any spoken words or sounds they wish to share.

JawBite offers freedom, ease, an ability to share audio content and a 99 percent accuracy rate that empowers users to communicate digitally regardless of the phone platform.

With more than 600 dedicated servers, JawBite’s service and accuracy can scale to support millions of users, Thing5 officials noted. Operating as a cloud based SaaS (News – Alert) application, JawBite is expected to deliver safe, productive and flexible interaction platform.

When it comes to hosted PBX (News – Alert) (as opposed to premise PBX) considerations, there are some things to bear in mind:

There are two primary types of PBX solutions for business, according to VoIP-News, hosted PBX and premise-based IP PBX. “Hosted systems take most of the switching and intelligence of the system and move it offsite to a remote location where it is managed by the service provider,” VoIP-News officials say, adding that equipment at an organization’s site is limited to the phones themselves, some dedicated routing equipment and perhaps a switch to provide emergency access to the older traditional TDM (time-division multiplexing) telephone network.

As a result, VoIP-News officials say, “hosted systems are usually quicker and cheaper to install and set up. They offer a standardized set of services.” Because they are hosted remotely, there is less maintenance for a business and no need to perform upgrades, the industry journal says, adding that the downside is that upgrades often must wait until the service provider is prepared to offer them, so there is less flexibility and fewer options in configuring the system.

In contrast, premise-based PBXs require servers and more switches to be located at the business site: “The organization also has to be prepared to install, manage and upgrade them. The downside is a higher startup cost, the need to manage and maintain the system, and more difficulty growing the system in the future. On the other hand, the organization can upgrade to new features at will and has full ability to configure the system any way it likes.”

You’ll want to select a hosted PBX provider carefully, VoIP-News officials caution, warning that “some specialize in organizations of a particular size and can turn out to be unable to scale up beyond a certain number of users. On the other hand, others are unable to provide affordable service for a very small organization.”

When it comes to the typical scenario for a hosted provider, there are no or basic fixed setup costs, and the company pays a monthly charge per user. In contrast, premise-based systems feature a larger initial cost that covers servers, software, switches and gateways. “However,” VoIP-News officials say, after the initial setup, ongoing costs can be much lower. “It is also easy to predict the cost of growth with a hosted PBX, but scalability and expansion can be much harder to predict with premise-based IP PBXs.”

The bottom line: hosted PBXs are best for small businesses but good for medium-size businesses as well. They’re also good for businesses with a lot of remote users or those that anticipate rapid changes in size.

Premise systems are best for large, stable businesses with predictable volume that need custom features or to integrate the phone system into multiple business operations.

Britain’s largest phone company, BT, announced that it has expanded wholesale offering in the Netherlands with the launch of a new cloud-based solution – BT Virtual iPBX.

The BT Virtual iPBX enables resellers to offer Internet Protocol or “IP” voice services quickly, simply and cost-effectively to small- and medium sized enterprises or (SMEs), according to company officials.

Compared to traditional IP hosted PBX  solutions, which is mainly based on equipment deployed at the customer’s premises, the new hosted PBX solution offers great advantages to customers, said Carla Somhorst, BT’s general manager Global Telecom Markets or “GTM” Benelux.

BT’s GTM business sits within BT Global Services and provides capacity and capabilities to other telecom providers.

“It is cost efficient, future proof and the pay-as-you-go model significantly lowers investment barriers for the SME customers of our resellers,” Somhorst added.

BT already owns an extensive, 5700 kilometers fiber-optic network in the Netherlands and has a dual-data centre offering which the company thinks are the core building blocks for industry leading cloud services.

The service, immediately available in the Netherlands, enables resellers to offer SME’s a compelling solution that is usually only available to large corporations or government organizations, BT officials said.

The flexible, scalable service requires very little upfront investment and helps smaller organizations to reduce their cost-base, they added.

BT’s new Virtual iPBX supports regular voice services including IP, Session Initiation Protocol or “SIP” and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

Additionally it supports voicemail and PC fax, plus a number of unified communications features including computer telephony integration via soft phone, dual ringing, Outlook integration with presence information, fixed-to-mobile integration, virtual conference rooms and interactive voice response.

Atlantic Telecom is the first player to deploy BT Virtual iPBX in the market to offer their extensive Dutch customer base a service based on the new platform. The company will use it for its own organization as well, company officials said.
