To view the entire library of videos from other industry shows, Road shows as well as product demos and interviews in our in-house studio, visit the TMCnet Videos home page.)

As the cloud computing market continues to grow, some companies that provide IP communications products and services are finding it makes sense to informally partner or formally merge to strengthen complementary offerings and better provide what customers want.

This fall, Broadvox (News – Alert) and Cypress Communications looked at the markets they serve, and at their cloud ambitions for the coming years, and reached that conclusion that merging makes sense.

Broadvox is a SIP trunking services specialist that serves carriers and SMBs. Its ambitions include expanding into the enterprise market by offering cloud-based services like hosted PBX (News – Alert). Cypress is a unified communications pioneer and provider of hosted communication for SMBs and enterprises.

In a recent TMCnet video interview, Broadvox’s vice president of marketing and sales, David Byrd (News – Alert), talked about the impact of moves like the merger with Cypress, and how cloud computing is changing the face of IP communications.

One of Broadvox’s notable recent successes was achieving complete interoperability with Samsung’s (News – Alert) new platform. The company also announced its hosted Go!VBX program, featuring a new pricing paradigm for the hosted business model.

“We now have a flat-rate price for every extension that someone wants to buy with a hosted IP-PBX,” Byrd explained in the video interview. “Separately, you add whatever your communications usage is.”

This, Byrd thinks, has the potential to change the way customers think of hosted PBX services.

“We can reduce the price of a hosted virtual PBX by as much as 50 percent with this new model,” he noted. “No longer will you have to pay for extensions sitting in conference rooms, kitchens, closets, warehouses; you’ll only pay for actual usage.”

If the history of Broadvox and Cypress is any indication, innovations like a flat pricing model for hosted PBX will drive continued success for the now-merged companies as they march on together to take the cloud market by storm.

Mae Kowalke is a TMCnet contributor.
• With hosted telephony, the corporate phone system is in the service provider’s data center rather than in the corporate data center.

• Hosted telephony may present a slight increase in bandwidth usage but will generally not require expensive infrastructure changes.

• Managers should ensure that their corporate LANs and WANs can handle the increased load that voice traffic will bring to the network. Watch for excessive delays or bottlenecks that will degrade the quality of voice calls.

Just when you are getting over the novelty of the rotary dial phone, enterprise communication is becoming even more streamlined through hosted telephony. Also commonly referred to as “hosted PBX,” hosted telephony is making it less necessary for corporate IT departments to house, manage, and otherwise handle enterprise phone equipment and systems.
¦ THE CONCEPT

Robert Poe, chief analyst with VoIP Evolution (www.voipevolution.com), describes the concept of hosted telephony as “locating the corporate phone system in the service provider’s data center rather than in the corporate data center.” He explains, “The service provider owns and operates the equipment and software. The customer company simply pays a predictable monthly fee, typically per user or per extension.”

According to Adam Simpson, CTO at Easy Office Phone (www.easyofficephone.com), the end user requires only a softphone at each seat and a high-speed Internet connection to make use of a comprehensive set of business phone features. “These features were previously only available with a typically expensive and complex installation of a physical onsite PBX,” Simpson says. “With a hosted PBX, the end-user requirements are greatly simplified while all of the features of a traditional PBX are still made available.”

Jeff Gigoux, chief product officer at Ring Carrier (www.ringcarrier.com), says hosted telephony has dramatically shifted the cost for monthly communications service downward. He says companies offering hosted telephony are providing incentives to minimize upfront costs, which is very attractive to small and midsized enterprises, and a key requirement for this market segment to transition to VoIP.

¦ FAR-REACHING BENEFITS

One of the major technology transformations that hosted telephony brings is a complete breakdown of local, state, and country barriers to a communications system for companies of all sizes.

In regards to existing data centers, the impact will be limited to a relatively small increase in Internet bandwidth usage—about 87Kbps per call, Gigoux says. “In most cases, no major infrastructure changes will be required, although quality-of-service traffic prioritization may be advisable depending on end-user requirements,” he explains. “In regards to IT professionals, the technology represents a significant opportunity for additional sales and service avenues and benefits to end-user customers.” Gigoux says the technology has attained significant mainstream awareness and the demand for implementation will only grow.

Poe says that to prepare for the technology, IT and data center managers, depending on whether they already use IP as opposed to traditional phone systems in-house, may have to take steps to ensure that their corporate LANs and WANs can handle the increased load that voice traffic will put on their networks. Managers must also ensure that there are no excessive delays or bottlenecks in their networks that will degrade the quality of voice calls.

On the efficiency side of things, a hosted PBX implementation generally assumes Ethernet connections at each seat. “If these are already in place, rewiring is typically not needed,” Gigoux says.

by Chris A. MacKinnon
Gaining Popularity
According to Tomoko Shimizu, COO at Brekeke Software (http://www.brekeke.com/), there are many reasons hosted telephony is gathering so much attention:

• Recent, rapid growth in high-speed Internet access infrastructure

• Popularity of having employee at remote or home offices

• Minimized hiring and training of IT staff at company premises

• Availability of superior and up-to-date IP PBX features

• Increase in popularity and availability in cloud computing infrastructure

Over 929 Free Projects Have Been Run Since Test Tool Was Launched Last Month
Knoxville, TN (Vocus/PRWEB) December 15, 2010

Today HostMyCalls Hosted PBX Service website set new weekly traffic records for each of the past 6 weeks. Since the release of the HostMyCalls ISP Packet Loss and Latency Test Tool in early September, the traffic on the HostMyCalls.com servers has increased over 400%. The Test Tool has provided over 1049 free projects to users of ISP connections in 104 countries which monitored over 7,211 IP addresses with over 105 million ping packets sent and analyzed.

Deployment Purpose of the IP Packet Loss and Delay Test Tool

The Internet was designed to have and accommodate packet loss. Some old models claimed 5% packet loss was acceptable. Modern Internet applications do not tolerate packet loss. Today’s hottest real-time Internet services such as VoIP, gaming, streaming video such as Netflix, and video conferencing cannot handle more than 0.1% packet loss without degradation of service. The HostMyCalls IP Packet Loss and Delay Test Tool was born out of frustration working with ISPs to groom their circuits appropriately to support customers’ Hosted PBX needs.

“In constant communication with dozens of ISPs, we routinely found ourselves at a knowledge disadvantage when they would claim their Internet services were working properly. We also found ISPs unable to diagnose trouble unless it was happening at that moment. We created our tool to locate the source of packet loss, delay and low speed issues. We also wanted to understand what was happening on the Internet during intermittent problems.

“As we began using our new tool to our customers’ benefit, we examined the difficult interactions that we had with some ISPs even with our technical knowledge and realized the average consumer and business is completely at the mercy of their ISP. For this reason, we decided to make our test tool available to the Internet and built the same analysis into it that our own experts use in reviewing the results.

“Internet Quality of Service is paramount to the successful delivery of our Hosted PBX and VoIP Services. Our ability to be able to pinpoint the cause for performance issues has been greatly enhanced with our development and use of the IP Packet Loss and Delay Test Tool. We are glad to be able to share this troubleshooting asset with others. It is gratifying to hear from industry professionals and consumers alike who have solved their Internet problems with the aid of this tool.” The free public access to the IP Packet Loss and Delay Test Tool can be found at http://hostmycalls.com/tools/.

Hosted PBX and VoIP Service Provider

HostMyCalls products and services are provided by iMS, LLC. Founded in 2002, iMS, LLC is a privately held company providing IP communication solutions across most of the US market for small to mid-sized businesses.

Review: Bria Android Edition VoIP Client
By Gerry Blackwell

While VoIP over Wi-Fi is no longer leading edge, VoWi-Fi on a mobile phone is still pushing the envelope a little – VoIP over 3G even more so.

That CounterPath, maker of some of the most popular softphones, recently jumped into mobile VoIP with both feet is a sign the market is maturing. (A softphone is a program that turns a computing device into a phone so it can work with a VoIP service.) But as we discovered, the market may not be fully mature yet.

CounterPath launched an iPhone version of its Bria softphone in the summer, and last month added Bria Android Edition ($7.99). According to some company literature, the new product works with any device running Android 2.1 or higher. CounterPath has also published a list of compatible devices.

I tested Android Edition initially on a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant smartphone, part of a line that Samsung debuted in mid-July and sold a million of by late August — and one that appears on CounterPath’s list of compatible devices. Vibrant can now run under Android 2.2, but at the time of testing was running Android 2.1. Subsequently I tried it on a Motorola phone, the Milestone, a variant of the Droid product — also on the list — which is sold through Canada’s Bell Mobility. It runs Android 2.1. Late in the process, I also tested it on the brand new ViewSonic ViewPad 7, a 7-inch-screen tablet computer.

While there were some positives in what I saw, the testing suggests this product needs work. The Bria client did not function satisfactorily on any of these devices.

In fairness, the problem may be as much the fragmentation of the Android universe, with different variants of the operating system running on different hardware platforms creating an almost impossible situation for app developers.

CounterPath, to its credit, is not denying there are problems on some hardware platforms, and is promising solutions. It also says the product definitely works as advertised on some devices.

Customers can buy Bria Android Edition by surfing to the CounterPath website or going to the Android Market on their phone. Either way, you tap a link to download the program — I tapped a link in an email from CounterPath that did the same thing — and then tap the program icon to install it.

The client software installed quickly enough, but after I’d entered the license key, and it accepted the key, it told me it was still waiting for a server response. We waited together for a few minutes, with the Vibrant annoyingly timing out and turning off its screen every few minutes and having to be turned back on again. Finally, I gave up and tapped “cancel” — and only then discovered that underneath the waiting-for-server-response message was the configuration dialog for Bria where you enter details about your VoIP service.

The configuration dialog is simple enough: a list of identification/setup items – display name, user name, password, domain, outgoing proxy, authentication name, voice mail, etc. – with a right-arrow link beside each. Tap the link and the empty field and onscreen keyboard appear. After you enter the value, it appears under the field name.

I set up Bria Android Edition to work with an existing Junction Networks OnSIP hosted PBX. OnSIP is a very good small business (or small office) PBX solution that in earlier testing using the Windows desktop Bria client delivered generally excellent call quality.

Passwords are the trickiest part of setting up a SIP account on a mobile phone. The assigned password in this case was 12 characters and used numbers and upper and lower case letters. Entering it on the Vibrant’s onscreen keyboard was slightly tedious.

At the end of all the input, you click the login button. The first time I did this — with breath held — I received a message saying ‘STUN Error’ and something to the effect that the phone would automatically try to log in again. It may have tried, but it was only after I tapped the login button again that it successfully logged in to the OnSIP PBX on the second try and displayed the main Bria interface.
